React Native using Visual Studio Emulator for Android

After a bad experience with Android Default Emulator, i’m switching to Visual Studio Emulator for Android.

Installing it is easy, but it’s the react-native integration that’s tricky.

Follow these steps in order:

  • Install the emulator
  • Launch it as admin and then download API 23 (6.0) coz that’s the latest that react-native supports today
  • While the emulator is being setup, run this in admin cmd: reg add “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Android SDK Tools” /v Path /d %localappdata%\Android\sdk
  • Finally run: adb reverse tcp:8081 tcp:8081
  • Lastly, restart the Emulator and then run your app: react-native run-android
