Setting up Yarn on Windows and other speed related development tips.

  • Delete existing npm global packages (Optional)
    • delete the contents of: \\%appdata%\npm
  • Clear cache: npm cache clear
  • Install Yarn: https://yarnpkg.com/en/docs/install
  • whitelist your project folder and the Yarn cache directory (%LocalAppData%\Yarn) in your antivirus software (windows defender for me: steps here), otherwise installing packages will be significantly slower as every single file will be scanned as it’s written to disk.
  • Adding following nodeJS paths to Windows Defender exclusions:
      • DIR EXCLUSION
        • %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\npm
        • %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\npm-cache
        • C:\Users\ACER\AppData\Local\Yarn
        • C:\Users\ACER\AppData\Local\Android
      • EXE Exclusion:
        • C:\Program Files\nodejs\node.exe
        • C:\Program Files\Git\cmd\git.exe
        • C:\Python34\python.exe
  • Run cmd and editor etc. as admin
  • go to Windows Defender -> Settings and disable Real-time protection (at your own risk)
  • Start using yarn: https://yarnpkg.com/en/docs/usage
